Spooky Cemetery / Skywatch Friday

New Hope Christian Cemetery (1889-1958)

Tucked away far out in the woods on North Dallas County, Plantersville Alabama sits a small cemetery New Hope Christian Cemetery.

Walking through here this morning gave me a spooky feeling as it always does.You would NOT catch me out here after dark.

One story about this cemetery...While taking our children almost 11 years ago for a country dirt road ride we stopped hear.While reading the head stones there was a old man standing in the corner of the cemetery.As we were walking out my son turned and said "Where did that man go?" We looked all around and he was gone. There was no other car or homes for miles.Needless to say we got in the car and took off.We still talk about this as a family and how spooky that was .I wonder what my family will think when they find out I went out there by myself today?

I love to hear stories about our little town in North Dallas County , Plantersville.This is one recount of a building that has been vacant for years.Many thanks to my mother-in-lawfor this story.

Plantersville in the 1940's was a sleepy little farming town.We were most proud of our schools and churches.We had 4 stores with a large mercantile "Martin's Store" whose logo was "We handle everything from the cradle to the grave" Our men were serving in all areas during World War II .The woman kept the home fires burning.A man by the name of Enlow came to town and convinced Dr. Martin to open up a Chanile bedspread factory.They sewed and dyed the spreads in the building still standing in front of the post office.I may have been 16 yrs. old at the time but I remember at break time instead of cigarettes they got a dip of snuff.Several ladies had never worked outside the home and never had another job.It was great while it lasted!

The year was 1997 my son and his dad had gone fishin' on a fall day making memories. That little boy all grown up now still fishes just about every weekend. Nowadays there is a pretty blond and thier baby due in a few weeks at his side making new memories.

I guess my next Fishin' painting will have three subjects

Growing up in the 60's

You know you grew up in the 60's if:

Jimmy Tittle (Awesome Artist)

Jimmy Tittle has been involved with the entertainment industry most of his life as a musician, songwriter, singer and performer. At the age of eighteen he was fortunate enough to experience first-hand the enormous talents of Merle Haggard, as a member of his touring and recording band, The Strangers. Jimmy recognized immediately the genius of Haggard’s songwriting and considered him to be the quintessential writer of working-class poetry. Jimmy toured and performed with Merle for the next five years playing bass guitar, earning him six Super Picker awards as well as The Academy of Country Music’s Touring Band of the Year award four consecutive years.

Jimmy left The Strangers to pursue songwriting and formed a country band with Ricky Frizzell and Danny Husky, the sons of two legendary honky tonk heroes, Lefty Frizzell and Ferlin Husky. The band toured the South extensively, gaining a large following until a tragic accident took the life of Danny Husky. Jimmy returned to Nashville and worked as a session musician while continuing to write.

In 1982, Jimmy was invited to join the cast of another legendary performer, Johnny Cash. They traveled the world over the next seven years. Jimmy participated in numerous television specials and soundtrack albums, and has small acting roles in a film and several music videos. Jimmy left The Johnny Cash Show in 1989 to pursue an independent career in writing, recording, and performing.

Bug Music in Nashville signed Jimmy in 1989 to an exclusive songwriter’s agreement and soon had his songs recorded by artists such as Jann Browne, Johnny Cash, Evangeline, Rodney Crowell and Rosanne Cash. “On the Surface” was co-written by Jimmy and Rosanne which she recorded on her critically acclaimed album, “Interiors”. Jimmy has also co-written songs with Marty Stuart, John Hiatt, John Stewart, LeRoy Preston, Dave Alvin, Cindy Bullens and Rodney Crowell.Dixiefrog Records in Paris, France contacted Jimmy and he signed a recording contract which introduced him to the European market with his albums “Jimmy Tittle” (1990) and “Fade to Black” (1991). Sony Music France released his third CD titled “Real Life” as well as a compilation of all previous works titled “Room Full of Money, Heart Full of Pain”.

Jimmy’s works with Sony Music helped him to reach a broader audience in Europe. His records are released in France, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, Norway, Spain, Germany, Italy and Australia. His blending of country roots and Southern rock is the result of many miles, powerful influences, heart and soul.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

If you are ever in north Dallas County Alabama (Plantersville) one site you will see is our community of "Goats". I often think about the childhood story so many of us know ...so let's see if I can remember it.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Once upon a time three billy goats lived together in a field on a hillside. They were the three Billy Goats Gruff. There was a Big Billy Goat Gruff, a Middle Billy Goat Gruff and a Little Billy Goat Gruff.
Beside the billy goats' field ran a river. One day they decided to cross it and eat the grass on the other side. But first they had to go over the bridge. Under the bridge lived a big ugly troll.
First Little Billy Goat Gruff stepped onto the bridge. TRIP TRAP went his hooves.
"Who's that tripping over my bridge?" roared the Troll.
"It is only I, Little Billy Goat Gruff, going across the river to make myself fat," said Little Billy Goat Gruff in such a small voice.
"Now I'm coming to gobble you up," said the Troll.
"Oh, please don't eat me, I'm so small," said Little Billy Goat Gruff. "Wait for the next billy goat. He's much bigger."
"Well, be off with you," said the Troll.
A little while later, Middle Billy Goat Gruff stepped on to the bridge. TRIP TRAP, TRIP TRAP went his hooves. "Who's that tripping over my bridge?" roared the Troll.
"It is only I, Middle Billy Goat Gruff, going across the river to make myself fat," said Middle Billy Goat Gruff, whose voice was not so small.
"Now I'm coming to gobble you up," said the Troll.
"Oh, no, don't eat me," said Middle Billy Goat Gruff. "Wait for the next billy goat. He's the biggest of all."
"Very well, be off with you," said the Troll.
It wasn't long before Big Billy Goat Gruff stepped onto the bridge. TRIP TRAP, TRIP TRAP, TRIP TRAP went his hooves, and the bridge groaned under his weight.
"Who's that tramping over my bridge?" roared the Troll.
"It is I, Big Billy Goat Gruff," said Big Billy Goat Gruff, who had a rough, roaring voice of his own.
"Now I'm coming to gobble you up," said the Troll, and at once he jumped onto the bridge, very mean and hungry.
But Big Billy Goat Gruff was very tough and strong. He put down his head and charged the Troll and butted him so hard he flew high into the air and then fell down and splashed into the middle of the river.
And the great ugly troll was never seen again.
Then Big Billy Goat Gruff joined Middle Billy Goat Gruff and Little Billy Goat Gruff in the field on the far side of the river. There they go so fat that they could hardly walk home again.

The Confederate Rose
Sometimes referred to as the cotton rose, the Confederate rose is a unique Chinese shrub that is found throughout the southeastern United States. The unique popular name for the Confederate rose is based on the fact that the general area where this beautiful shrub is grown roughly corresponds to the section of the USA that once seceded from the Union and was known as the Confederate States of America.
The Confederate rose, properly identified as hibiscus mutabilis, is different in appearance from more conventional types of roses. Grown on plants that are shrublike and can grow to a height of twelve to fifteen feet, the Confederate rose has the unique property of changing color during the course of the day. The bloom on the rose opens in the morning as a beautiful white or a subtle pink, and gradually darkens during the course of the day. By evening, the petals of the Confederate rose typically achieve a deep red appearance.

The beauty of autumn colors has always been a highlight to me this time of year.As a child how many of us would press them in a book or use them for a school project?
My medium for this painting was water colors.

The Butterflies Are Coming!

Thursday Oct. 9 th 2008 at 5:00 pm The grand unveiling of The Butterfly Project will take place in Selma Alabama! Over 40 butterfly sculptures throughout the the down town district. Created by local artists, craftsmen and school children these 5-foot tall butterflies showcase the artistic talent of Selma.

This Butterfly will be a part of Riverfront Market Day on Water Ave. and YOU can be the butterfly!Riverfront Market Day is every second Saturday of each October.More then 350 vendors arts, crafts, music and eats....and don't forget to look for all the Butterfly Sculptures they will not be hard to miss!

Who Looked In This Mirror?

So many times as I pass my fireplace in the front hall a thought comes to mind........ Who Looked In This Mirror? For over 100 years many faces looked in this direction. I would love to hear the stories that go with each face.I have heard quite a few stories and one being a very good friend that was born in my home 70 years ago.This used to be his families living room. Can you just imagine his mama holding him up to the mirror with smiles and listening to Glenn Miller?

Simplify Your Life(Skywatch Friday)

A trip on the dirt roads today in North Dallas County Alabama brought to mind what I was taught as a child and have passed it on to my own,"Simplify Your Life". During this time of year I would take my children on dirt road rides and we would pick tons of these beauties,bring them home and put them in an Aunt Jemima syrup bottle. The simplicity of nature and a recyclable bottle used for a vase. Alone today with my camera thinking of fall days like today. I am sure my children can come up with a few things that happend durring our adventures.

A Morning With Angels

This plant well known as an Angel Trumpet , Brugmansia or Datura opens after dark and remains open until the sunlight hits them the next morning. Angel trumpet releases from its flowers a really sweet perfume but also an intoxicating scent .
