Michael “Papa Mike” Joseph Leone, 90, of Franklin, passed away on Friday, September 7, 2012.
Born in Carona, NY, he was the son of the late Dominic Leone and Angelina Carbone Leone. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Xefos and Mary Forte; brother, Vincent Leone and step-son, Mark McQueen. Mike served in WWII as a Navy Sea Bee. He was a professional trumpet player, playing with many Big Bands including, Artie Shaw and Vincent Lopez. Mike was technical director for Selmer’s of Elkart from 1952-1973; owned and operated “Leone’s Del Rio” Restaurant, Motel & Trailer Park in Thonotosassa, FL with his wife, Phyllis. After moving to North Carolina, he played with the Haywood Community Concert Band and Frog Level Philharmonic Dixie Land Band. He was a member of American Legion Post 108 and member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Franklin.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Phyllis Jean Callahan McQueen Leone; daughter, Lynn Leone and husband Michael Holton of South Bend, IN; three sons, Dr. Michael “Mick” Leone Jr. of San Diego, CA, Deacon Lawrence “Larry” Leone and wife June of Stanton, CA and James “Jay” of South Bend, IN; two step-daughters, Christine Ryan and husband Kevin of Waynesville, NC and Kathleen Wright and husband Donald of Plantersville, AL; bothers, Danny Leone and Richard Leone; fourteen grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
